African Identity as generator
Indigenous knowledge, inherited through life patterns, myths, culture, customs and beliefs is still significantly evident and relevant today.
The customs and traditions which make up this cultural heritage form guidelines to the development of an inclusive building embodying the African attributes of:
- Darkness and Light
- Construction and Space
- Solid and Transparent
a side view of the iconic chamber
The intangible aspect of ‘African Memory’ is illustrated by the construction of the iconic chamber which contrasts the linear gallery.
This sombre special experience is intended to remind the viewer of the continent’s turbulent history and serves to ensure peaceful and meaningful dialogue between nations.
The building cuts a strong East/West axis through the site, punctuated by the chamber which acts as a pivotal point to the linear form.

At night, the parliament appears as a horizontal shaft of light. Etched texts of the Parliament’s Manifesto covers the glass screen wall in all the languages of Africa. The chamber, housed in a glass cylinder and enclosed in a double timber screen is the focus along the backdrop of the linear southern façade. Glazed and timber facades are expressive of the stark landscape. The building is a protective place that encases the user within its two walls and though secure and safe, is also transparent.
